Can I Answer A Question For You? (847) 257-5172 todd@modernathletept.com

I help Modern Athletes "reboot" their movement so they can live their best life, free from pain and limitation. This approach targets the root cause of symptoms, breaking the cycle of just managing them. Learn how to build a foundation that supports your sport or fitness lifestyle for years to come. Let me show you how to Reboot Performance.

Hello. Hi. Hiya. Hey. And What’s Up?

I’m tickled pink to have you here. 🙂

I’d wager you’re expecting to see what certifications I have, my dog’s name, and what I do on the weekend. But I’m just not sure how helpful that is to you.

So how about I share a bit about me to help you decide if I’m a good fit for your needs?

Like you, I’ve been through different things in life that have shaped who I am, how I see the world, and how I operate.

Spoiler Alert: There was no Hollywood-style climactic event, just a series of small realizations that quietly influenced how I got here now, doing what I do.

The Past…

I’ve been an “employee” three times. My first three jobs, to be exact. And I don’t know whether or not it’s grammatically correct for employee to be in quotes…

I guess it’s just my way of saying I was providing a service that matched the work environment rather than what my heart was telling me was best.

The best way I can explain it is this: My work felt like a carousel ride. Patients got on, went round and round a few times, but had limited options to what they could experience.

Most were happy, at least on the surface. But few were really changed.

I wasn’t happy.

Employer A burnt me out in two and a half years. Employer B stressed the importance of happy doctors. Employer C was a mixed bag of frustrations.

All three spots were filled with wonderful co-workers and patients, but they operated as “typical” PT clinics. Meaning, the business model revolved around pleasing the payer (aka, insurance) and referral source (aka, doctor office)…

Less so about healing the individual who was supposed to be at the center of it all.

And I get it, there’s a business to running a therapy clinic.

The employer needs volume of patients to turn a profit, which is why you’ll see therapists routinely double-booked (or worse).

But having just enough time to give some treatment aimed at short-term relief didn’t feel right to me. Even though a lot of patients seemed fine with it.

Maybe they weren’t aware a better environment should be available to them — one that allowed the therapist the time needed to make a meaningful impact.

Maybe they didn’t care…

But I did care. And it bothered me in a deep way when the environment I was working in was the actual limitation.

I knew I wasn’t realistically going to fix everyone I encountered. But man, at least let me give it a shot! Especially when the person looked me in the eye and said “Can you help? This is important to me.”

At a minimum, I wanted the depth and detail of my efforts to be equal to the determination of the person who had sought out my expertise!

After twelve years spent as a square peg trying to fit into a round hole…

I decided to commit to being the unique option for those who sought more profound changes and were just as frustrated with the status quo as I was.

So, in the summer of 2012, I created Modern Athlete PT.

The Present…

Time flies. Many things change, but not everything.

In the years since opening my own clinic, my treatment methods have continued to evolve. But my philosophy remains constant:

Modern Athlete PT exists to serve you and your unique, active lifestyle.

I understand that you are going to have to make decisions about what’s best for your body. So my pledge to you is this: I will always suggest what is best for YOU and not what is best for my business.

I realize that may be an odd statement to have to make. But I expect you found my website today because other healthcare providers weren’t serving you to the degree that your lifestyle needs.

I’m not “typical”, though…

Whether it’s the unique training I’ve had to change your body’s foundation of movement control…

Or the relaxed, deeply personal atmosphere my clinic provides…

You’ll notice that your well-being is my primary concern.

Here’s a brief look into how my clinic is designed to serve you:

Part One of My Philosophy is helping you to get to know your own body.

When you better understand the issues your body is experiencing you can be more confident in doing what’s best to meet YOUR goals.

I’ve found that tuning in to what you recognize, feel, and sense in specific positions and with the exercises will help you understand the issues better. This allows you to feel the difference in ease going into a position as compared to its opposite. Nothing gets your attention like a bit of struggle (or major struggle) as compared to no struggle at all…

And the differences in struggle tie directly into the problem your body is experiencing, and why your body has compensation patterns set up to avoid that struggle in your every day life or during sport.

Part Two of My Philosophy is to customize your solution.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach in my clinic.

You’ll need different approaches for a sport competition coming up in two weeks versus a competition six months away.

And you’ll need a different approach when just regular ol’ walking is painful, as opposed to when pain only occurs with end-range high-level movements.

Your solution is customized on two levels: (1) Immediate reduction of symptoms, and (2) promoting long-term benefits by addressing the source of your issue.

And the sooner you learn this little gem of truth, the better: Treating your symptoms is NOT the same thing as treating the source of those symptoms.

Part Three of My Philosophy is to meet you where you’re at.

That means we assess your current function, provide a treatment activity, then reassess the effectiveness of that activity on making an IMMEDIATE impact for you…

And we do that with everything.

You are a complex, living, breathing, adapting individual! You need a system that responds to your needs now, so your movement system can learn and make improvements now, not three months from now.

Your Future…

I expect to have to earn your trust. I won’t take that for granted.

In order to do that, I’ll start by showing you the same devotion and care that I would want someone to show to my loved ones.

To that end, I wrote a Manifesto to let you know what guides and inspires my work with the human movement system.

It’s for Modern Athletes like us, who seek to live actively in a way that defines who we are and makes our lives more special — Reboot Performance: A Manifesto for Modern Athletes — Stop Pain, Build Efficient Movement, & Live Your Best Active Life.

Please reach out anytime.

All my best,

Todd

Just in case you NEED to see some technical jargon…

My treatment methods draw heavily upon the following assessment and treatment methods:

Postural Restoration Institute® (PRI)

Dry Needling (aka Functional Dry Needling) – coursework through Kinetacore

Unified Health & Performance Continuum (UHP)

Selective Functional Movement Assessment® (SFMA)

Functional Movement Screen® (FMS)

Y Balance Testing

Evidence Based Fitness Academy

Functional Movement Taping – coursework through RockTape

Now, this is obviously not an exhaustive list. I’ve been at this therapy thing for around 25 years, so the various continuing education list is quite long…

And I know you’re not that interested. 🙂
