Different Than the Rest

The methods I use to solve the Real Problem for my clients is not “mainstream” right now. I hope that changes. Soon.

When I meet new prospects, I inevitably discuss how I’m different than 95% of the other choices out there.

I understand that might seem like a fluffy number. But I assure you, the number is based on real math.

If you’re interested, here’s the data that leads me to that number:

According to 2021 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational employment and wages data, there were 225,330 licensed physical therapists in the United States.

Figure 1. Physical Therapists in U.S. Adapted from “A Physical Therapy Profile: Demographics of the Profession, 2021-2022,” by the American Physical Therapy Association, 2023, p. 5.

The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), estimates 39% of therapists practiced in private outpatient offices. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 43%.

Figure 2. Physical Therapy Practice Setting. Adapted from “A Physical Therapy Profile: Demographics of the Profession, 2021-2022,” by the American Physical Therapy Association, 2023, p. 10.

So math tells us that an estimated 87,870 – 96,890 physical therapists work in outpatient offices.

And that number doesn’t include hospital-based outpatient centers. If it did, we’re now talking closer to 135,000 physical therapists in outpatient settings.

Now, the organization I credit with the vast majority of influence in how I evaluate, plan, and provide treatment to clients is the Postural Restoration Institute® (PRI).  As of this moment (October 2024), they note that 243 professionals have passed their certification program.

Those 243 certified professionals are comprised of physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, occupational therapists, and chiropractors…Not just physical therapists.

And this certification process requires a lot of hoops to jump through. So many more people have taken their coursework than have gone all the way through to certification.

Let’s be conservative, and estimate that for every 1 certified individual another 10 individuals have taken the three courses needed to get a decent working knowledge of PRI principles. That number would be 2430.

So of the estimated 87,870 physical therapists estimated to work in private outpatient clinics, approximately 2430 have taken all three of PRI’s pre-requisite courses.

This means 2.8% of therapists have at least a basic understanding of PRI principles and methods.

(2430 divided by 87,870…Then converted to percentage.)

To date, I’ve taken eight different PRI courses (some of them multiple times — they’re just that good) and watched hundreds of hours of extra video they produce.

Because of all this, I’m fully confident my methods are different than 95% of other therapists out there.

And like I said, I hope that changes.
